What restoration involves
Every elevation is checked board by board before a quote is finalised. Soft or rotted sections are cut out and spliced with matching profile timber rather than filled, because filler over rot is a cosmetic fix that fails within a couple of years and takes the coating with it.
Loose boards are re-fixed, splits are cleaned out and filled with a flexible filler that moves with the timber, and old coatings are taken back to a firm, sound edge. On anything built before 1970 the coating is treated as lead-based until testing says otherwise, which means wet preparation methods, controlled scraping and no dry power sanding.
Bare timber is primed the day it is exposed. Leaving stripped weatherboard open overnight in a coastal suburb is how salt and moisture get into the grain before the primer does.

Salt air is the reason we specify differently here. Exterior systems need flexibility to handle the timber moving, plus genuine UV and salt resistance. How often will a weatherboard house near the bay need repainting?
Closer to the water the cycle is shorter than the Melbourne average. Exposed elevations facing the bay often need attention before sheltered ones, and it is common to repaint a weather-facing wall on a shorter cycle than the rest of the house rather than doing everything at once.
Can rotten boards be repaired without replacing the whole wall?
Yes, in almost every case. Rot concentrates at board ends, around openings and low to the ground. We cut out the affected section, splice in matching timber, prime it immediately and blend the repair so it disappears once the topcoats are on.
Is filler ever acceptable on weatherboard?
For nail holes, small splits and minor defects, yes. For structural rot, no. Filler has no strength and it will not stop the decay behind it, so a filled rot pocket simply reappears, usually within two or three years and usually taking the new paint with it.
Do you handle lead paint on older homes?
Yes. Anything pre-1970 is assumed to contain lead until proven otherwise. That means wet scraping rather than dry sanding, ground sheeting to capture debris, and safe collection and disposal. It is slower than a standard prep and it is not something we skip.
